The Parks- riversands

This unit was decorated for a showcase at the Home Décor Expo 2021. The brief was for each designer to find something that inspired them and to bring it to life. The themes of identity and belonging for the tenants living at the Parks Lifestyle apartments inspired Lwazi. 

He developed a positive sense of who they are and felt that they are valued and respected as part of a family and community.

He wanted to express these themes by exploring the idea of being in two places at once. Whether as an insider, outsider, immigrant, native, or being seen as familiar or exotic.

He intended to blend the two ideals of westernized design and the South African aesthetic. This created a sense of belonging and a proudly South African identity that people can relate to while staying comfortable in a home away from home. A 70s Retro Style is the design style used as a guide to achieve the unit’s look and feel. 

This particular trend features warm elements that people want to bring into their homes. The style was bold and colourful and in line with the majority of the South African aesthetic as seen with the décor, furniture, bold colours, wall paint and the wallpaper on the roof.
